Charles Brown awarded Tū Māia (Integrity) Award
Charles Brown, TBIG’s Engineer to Contract Lead, has been awarded the Tū Māia Integrity Award at the 2023 Minister of Defence Awards of Excellence to Industry on 7 May in Wellington, presented by Hon Judith Collins KC.
The awards highlight and acknowledge the major contributions made by industry to New Zealand Defence.
Charles was recognised for his ongoing commitment to supporting the delivery of the critical defence infrastructure at Base Ohakea. He received the award for his outstanding demonstration of the defence value, integrity.
He said receiving the award had been a humbling experience. “It’s rewarding to be recognised for the work I’m undertaking, and the role that’s required in that space. It’s nice to have appreciation from the clients for the work I deliver,” he said.
Charles was appointed as the Engineer to Contract for the infrastructure components for the Air Surveillance Maritime Patrol (P-8A Poseidon) at Base Ohakea and Future Air Mobility Capability (C-130J Hercules) project at Base Whenuapai.
The awards recognised that Charles brought a high level of respect and professionalism to the role. Rob Whight, P8 Programme Project Team Lead at New Zealand Defence Force described how Charles led the two projects in a fair and transparent manner, delivering decisions with integrity, which led to his nomination.
When asked what working with integrity meant to him, Charles said it comes down to sticking by the decisions you make. “If it’s not the right decision, you’re able to assess and resolve any issues with the client amicably. It’s about not being swayed by other people’s opinions.”
Charles is among several Engineer to Contract specialists at TBIG who add value by providing a truly independent specialised service, separate to that of project management.
