The St Bede’s College Chapel and Performing Arts Centre was awarded the Supreme New Zealand Commercial Project of the Year for 2020. This outstanding award sets the benchmark for commercial construction and recognises the team collaboration and innovation that brings projects like this to life.

Looking to the future, the new Chapel and extended Performing Arts Centre form a strong heart for St Bede’s College. The new Chapel replaced a temporary facility which had been used as a place of worship since the 2011 earthquakes. Considerable effort was made to seamlessly incorporate the College’s salvaged fittings such as stained-glass windows, the organ, stations of the cross, pews, altar, statues, bell and wood carvings. The interior has been designed to enhance the acoustics of the choral and instrumental music associated with the celebration of mass and a gallery sits above the narthex.

The seismic strengthening of the Performing Arts Centre successfully returned it to its original functionality and the extensions included a kitchen, large foyer and outdoor deck. What makes these two projects so special is the high level of teamwork. Congratulations to St Bede’s College and the entire project team including The Building Intelligence Group, Naylor Love, Wilkie + Bruce, Lewis Bradford, Rawlinsons and Tonkin + Taylor.

This was two distinctive interlocking building projects. They exemplify how we can build back better, while successfully maintaining the historic features of a build.

Majestic Centre

The Majestic Centre, a 32 storey A grade office tower in Wellington, was one of the largest and most complex seismic strengthening programmes ever undertaken in New Zealand.

Tackling the seismic upgrade over 4.5 years in a fully occupied building presented a highly challenging proposition for the project team. Impacting virtually every major structural element of the building, the work equated to a rebuild of the building from the inside out.

The engineering design and construction solutions included elements that were a world first, producing a knowledge base which will be of benefit to other building owners and clients.

This successful project was a finalist in the NZ Property Council Awards.

The Building Intelligence Group skillfully weaved the complex requirements together and led the project team to develop strategies and working methodologies that allowed the successful completion of the project.

Hall of Memories

After the Christchurch earthquakes, the need to seismically upgrade the Category 1 Heritage listed Hall of Memories in Wellington became a priority. This iconic building serves as the commemorative chapel of the National War Memorial.

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage set a very clear objective, the work should be imperceptible and needed to be ready for the Anzac Day Centenary Celebrations in 2015.

Our knowledge of heritage and seismic projects was invaluable, and The Building Intelligence Group led a specialist team to carry out the seismic strengthening and rehabilitation works.

Looking at a photograph of the Hall of Memories before and after the restoration, you likely wouldn’t be able to tell much difference – which was the objective.

Ibis Hotel Seismic Remediation

Ibis Hotel

The February 2011 earthquake closed the Ibis and Novotel Hotels located in the Red Zone. The Building Intelligence Group was engaged to manage the seismic remediation of two hotels concurrently.

Delivering projects in the Red Zone was highly demanding and presented a range of unique project risks, consenting and access strategies and sequencing of works to find the best solutions to lead a scope of works that was unchartered territory in New Zealand.

The Ibis was the first hotel to reopen in the Red Zone, a hugely positive step for Christchurch. The reinstatement of the Novotel hotel soon followed.

It really brought home to me the absolute advantage of using a project management company that is independent.

Old High Court restoration

The Old High Court is one of New Zealand’s most important public buildings. Strengthening, restoring and base isolating this Category I heritage building concurrently with the new build of the adjacent Supreme Court, was one of Wellington’s most unique and challenging projects.

As Project Managers, The Building Intelligence Group established and led the optimal team to deliver this landmark project.

A project of this magnitude demanded continuously balancing the functional requirements, integrity of the architecture, heritage values, cost and timeframes to ensure no element was compromised by another.

Receiving many accolades, this successful project was a multiple-award winner.
