Stand Tū Māia Whangārei Centre

The Stand Tū Māia Whangārei centre is more than a building – it’s a place of safety, connection and hope, where tamariki and whānau can heal, rediscover their strength and look forward to brighter futures together.

As a charitable trust, Stand Tū Māia supports children and families facing significant challenges, working with more than 2,000 whānau each year and reaching over 6,000 individual family members across Aotearoa. The new centre strengthens their ability to deliver life‑changing outcomes for Whangārei and the wider Northland region, providing a purpose‑built environment that supports their holistic model of care.

The design reflects Stand Tū Māia’s commitment to keeping whānau together. It balances small, private spaces with shared environments including a gym, dining hall, therapy and learning spaces. These shared areas support healing through movement, learning and connection. A local Kaumatua described the feeling of the space, saying, “It feels like the buildings are shaped like a mother’s arms - wrapping around and holding you.”

TBIG was proud to lead the project from concept through to completion, managing the demolition of the existing premises and delivering four new purpose‑built structures. Working closely with Stand Tū Māia, the local community and project partners, the team ensured every detail aligned with the organisation’s values and the needs of the tamariki and whānau they serve.

Our long‑standing relationship with Stand Tū Māia underpinned the success of the project and reflects what can be achieved when teams work together with a shared purpose to bring a meaningful vision to life.

Seeing the centre open and knowing the difference it will make for tamariki is incredibly rewarding. This was a project with heart, and we’re proud to have played a part in it.

te mĀTĀwai - 139 GREYS AVENUE REDEVELOPMENT

We’re immensely proud to be Project Managers on the redevelopment of Kāinga Ora’s public housing complex Te Mātāwai, at 139 Greys Avenue. Te Mātāwai is the largest, single site supported housing development by Kāinga Ora to date and is part of the Government’s housing programme.

Consisting of three towers linked by a central podium and accommodating 276 apartments, with at least 200 retained as social housing, Te Mātāwai provides tenants with access to around-the-clock, on-site support services. Facilities include medical rooms, commercial kitchen, computer room, communal laundry and dining. Kāinga Ora will help residents build social support networks and access services including healthcare, counselling, budgeting, skills development, and employment assistance that will improve wellbeing and provide opportunity.

Te Mātāwai incorporates significant local iwi Ngāti Whatua Ōrākei cultural design elements within the architecture, interior, and landscape design. Everything says community at its heart. Meeting Kāinga Ora’s design standards whilst trying to push the boundaries with innovation and ensure the best outcome for this apartment type development was an important factor for the wider project team’s approach. Kāinga Ora has placed great emphasis on achieving broader outcomes throughout the project.

Oranga Tamariki Pāpāmoa fitout

Oranga Tamariki have moved into their new two-level home in Domain Road in Pāpāmoa, with the new site named Ngā Parirau. It brings staff from the Tauranga office to this location, enhancing collaboration and Oranga Tamariki’s service.

The Building Intelligence Group have worked with Oranga Tamariki on several office fitouts and furniture replacement programmes across New Zealand, and our local team in Tauranga were ideally placed to bring this knowledge and consistency to the table. TBIG were engaged to provide Project Management services for the Pāpāmoa office accommodation fitout works over 1,360m².

With the Landlord’s agreement, Oranga Tamariki were able to introduce several sustainable features to the project including a full solar array on the roof, electric vehicle charging stations and e-bike stations. The Oranga Tamariki fitout also features a unique colour palette to echo Pāpāmoa, and the colours reflect the beach, sand dunes, reeds, flaxes, and the Pāpāmoa Hills.

The new fitout was widely appreciated when the staff moved in. The project team worked exceptionally well together to achieve the project’s completion and the success story it is today.

SOCIAL HOUSING

The Hanson Court redevelopment was part of the Wellington City Council’s $400M Housing Upgrade Project. As a 50-year old complex, the vision was to upgrade living conditions, creating warmer, safer, welcoming homes.

The refurbishment involved 105 apartments across six different buildings and a community centre. Delivery was split into four separate phases to maintain housing stock for existing tenants.

The modernisation was about giving the homes a new sense of identity. This Newtown based project was a crucial part of the major initiative that the Council undertook city wide to substantially improve social housing in the Capital.

The Building Intelligence Group successfully navigated the complexities of leading a highly staged project, in the middle of people’s lives. They worked exceptionally with all stakeholders and they ensured re-occupation was seamless.
