Hawke’s Bay Radiology Department upgrades
As part of the Government and Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Building Hospitals Better initiative, the expansion of Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s radiology department was the first project to apply a new model for delivering hospital upgrades faster and with greater certainty.
TBIG worked closely with Health New Zealand and the wider delivery team to establish a collaborative and agile approach that prioritised programme certainty, cost control and minimal disruption. Radiology services remained operational throughout construction, supported by careful staging and close engagement with hospital staff. What began as a CT scanner replacement evolved into a full radiology upgrade, with Stage One delivered in just nine months and Stage Two now underway.
Delivering the project within an ageing hospital building required flexibility and prompt decision-making, with limited historical documentation and complex existing infrastructure. TBIG managed the programme through regular engagement with neighbouring departments, ensuring clinical workflows across the hospital continued safely and smoothly.
Stage One of the redevelopment delivered 808 square metres of new clinical space, including a second CT scanner and a new MRI suite. Imaging capacity has doubled, enabling more than 10,000 additional scans each year and reducing wait times for patients across the region. New dedicated spaces for patient preparation and post-scan care have further improved staff workflows and patient experience.
As locals, TBIG’s Hawke’s Bay team is committed to delivering healthcare environments that reflect community values and support healthier futures.
