DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTONS BOILER TRANSITION PROGRAMME
TBIG’s Programme Management team were engaged by the Department of Corrections to lead a feasibility study into the transition of high emitting coal, diesel, and gas boilers across the Department of Corrections estate. The objective was to provide suitable options for lower emitting sources of energy for Space Heating and Domestic Hot Water to help assist the Department to meet the Government’s reductions target dates for Green House Gas emission, 21% reduction by 2025 and a 42% reduction by 2030.
Transitioning fossil fuelled boilers to lower emission energy sources forms a key part of a wider strategy to reach these targets. TBIG’s Programme Management team supported a collaborative approach to the feasibility studies development which were carried out across the Department’s seventeen sites across Aotearoa. TBIG led the feasibility studies and managed all governance and deliverables.
The feasibility studies have provided the preferred pathways inclusive of OPEX and CAPEX for each individual site to transition to a lower emitting energy source. The transition needs to be carefully planned and is intended to be delivered over a period of seven years and will achieve a significant reduction in carbon emissions across the Department’s estate.
