Ministry of education coal boiler replacement programme

The Building Intelligence Group’s Programme Management Team is working with the Ministry of Education and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) to transition away from coal fired heating systems in schools to lower carbon emitting energy solutions. The programme encompasses 97 primary and secondary schools across Aotearoa and is on track for completion in 2025 and is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by around 34,500 tonnes over 10 years.

The new heating solutions are all about reducing carbon emissions and moving to more sustainable alternatives by replacing coal boilers with modern, energy efficient alternatives, which are better for the health of our tamariki in schools.

Our team provides a project guide to each school and agrees a project plan that minimises disruption to the school. TBIG has implemented a strict H&S plan to be managed by all contractors on all sites and managed through TBIG’s inhouse project controls system.

The national programme has now been underway since 2021 with 93 boilers replaced as of July 2023.

Partnering with TBIG has yielded outstanding results for the Ministry of Education’s coal boiler replacement programme. The team is solutions-focused, responsive, and adaptable to meet the programme’s changing needs. We value their attention to detail and ability to communicate effectively with schools.

Sarah Best, Acting programme manager, Ministry of Education.
